Five-term Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter lost a primary to little known challenger Rep. Joe Sestak. Specter, a Republican for his first 29 years in the Senate, switched parties when he realized he stood no chance in a Republican primary. Of course, though Specter has always been a left-leaning Republican, he's still essentially a Republican, which, not unsurprisingly, turned off some Democratic voters.

I've always liked him, and he's about the ONLY Republican politician I can say that about.
I actually like him too, but switching affiliations to avoid losing a primary and then still losing the primary -- and 30 years of good will in your party -- meets our Worst Ideas ctiteria.
